A
new report, published by EIA and Indonesian partners Telepak, details the sickeningly
low prices paid to indigenous tribes for forest land and timber by an Indonesian
palm oil company in Papua.
The
report, Clear-Cut Exploitation, contains a copy of a contract between the palm oil company and the Moi
tribe clan leader, showing how they bought 14.2 sq km of forest for just $923,
which equates to just $0.65c per hectare. Once developed, the plantation would
be worth $162 million, or $5,000 per hectare, 7812 times the price they paid.
Cambodian activist murdered
Forests Campaigner Tom Johnson reports on the sad death of prominent Cambodian environmental activist Chut Wutty, who was shot and killed in the Koh Kong province of the country last month, as he documented illegal logging in the region.
EIA shares its expertise
EIA has returned to the Muara Tae community in Indonesia’s East Kalimantan province to provide them with the tools and the know-how to document illegal logging.
